The Texas Department of State Health Services has selected the Hidalgo County Women Infants and Children (WIC) Program to participate in a pilot Summer Food Program. The program will serve lunch to WIC clients and their minor-aged children from June 5 through August 18 provided by Catholic Charities.

The $75,000 grant from the Texas Department of State Health Services will allow six WIC clinics to launch a summer food pilot program, reported Director Clarissa Ramirez.

The following WIC clinics will be participating in the program: Mercedes (540 S. Texas), Donna (301 S. 8th St.), Edinburg (3105 E. Richardson), Alton I (3513 E. Main Ave., Suite 104), Alton II (3503 W. 5 Mile Rd, Suites 5, 6, 7) and Sullivan City (371 E. Expressway 83).

“Our staff is very excited to partake in this new endeavor," said Ramirez. "We hope to continue providing summer meals at our WIC clinics for many years to come and would really like to expand to other clinics in the future.”

The program is expected to feed 10-15 children per day. The meals will inlcude a milk serving, two servings of vegetables and/or fruit, a whole grain serving or bread serving, and a serving of meat or meat alternatives.

The WIC Summer Food Pilot Program will begin June 1 and is for children 18 and under, along with the person who accompanies them to the clinic. Families must meet certain qualifications to be eligible to participate.
