STREETLIGHTS A SUCCESS IN NEIGHBORHOODS TARGETED FOR COUNTY'S PILOT PROGRAM

The Streetlight Pilot Program has been extremely successful to residents and the communities that were targeted for the pilot program, said Rey Salazar, director of the Strategic Planning Division in the Budget and Management Office.

The program, which allows colonia residents to apply to partner financially with the county to install lights in their neighborhoods, has made residents feel safer and has generated evening community activities, such as soccer games.

“The partnership and the work that was done involved a lot of coordination, updates, information and feedback between the community, the chiefs, and the governing bodies” Salazar said. “When we look at the efforts that everyone has made, we reflect on recommendations to move forward, and most importantly we need to continue to work with Community Advocacy Groups."

Over 800 lots in rural neighborhoods from all four precincts participated in the pilot program.

“This is a perfect example of a good public-private partnership," said Precinct 4 Commissioner Joseph Palacios. "It’s not a giveaway program, there’s a much needed investment, not just on the county, but obviously on the residents to take care of the electrical bills that they sustain month by month.”
