With the Texas Department of Agriculture Summer Food Service Program, children and teens ages 18 and younger can continue to eat healthy meals throughout the summer at no cost and without having to register for the program or even show identification.

"This is wonderful news, as one in four Texas children faces food insecurity," said Precinct 3 Chief of Staff Dr. Mona Parras.

Hidalgo County, in collaboration with the Summer Food Service Program, has up to 260 locations that offer free breakfast and lunch for children ages 18 and under as well as offering meals at reduced prices for their parents.

“Our goal is to make sure that no child goes hungry and to ensure that Hidalgo County’s children have nutritious meals year-round,” said Baylor University’s Texas Hunger Initiative Regional Director Elaine Hernandez.

There are several ways to connect needy families to the Summer Food Program. They can call 211, visit the website SummerFood.org, or text “FOODTX” to 877-877 for information on the three nearest locations.
